I wish there were a single-word conditional in English so that I could pointedly not use it.

my dad tells a story about a friend who scandalized the French family he was staying with by saying “je veux du beurre” rather than “je voudrais du beurre,” because of its childishness and rudeness.

I don’t have the wistfulness of the conditional. Je veux. I want. Simple, direct, one syllable words that encompass everything. I want the way a child wants, undefinedly but overpoweringly. There is nothing polite about the feeling below my heart. It reaches out, though for what I don’t know.

It all comes down to this: the sharp pointed desire made naked: I want.
