So, yeah, I saw Pirates of the Caribbean from 10:35 to 1:00. I can really stabalize my sleep schedual. But anyway.

I really really liked it. Of course, neither Orlando Bloom nor Kiera Knightly can act their collective way out of a wet paper bag, but everyone else was very good. The plot was ridiculous, but that's the point, isn't it?

The movie was really at its best during the over-the-top action sequences, which I usually dislike. The three-way duel was clever and well-choreographed; the waterwheel business was funny; the ball on the island in the beginning was the definition of 'implausable' - and all of them were hilarious.

I thought Elizabeth's scene at the end was wonderfully written; as I said, she can't act. It's totally in character - she'll do anything to save Will, and herself as well. I am very, very happy to see the hero of a movie - or really any mainstream medium - do somthing morally questionable and not be imediately punished.

References to the first movie were clever enough, not overdone - the delivery on the 'sea-turtles' line was bad, but that's entirely Bloom's fault.

The cannibles were terribly racist: out of the thirties rather than the oughties, but I suppose if you're doing a spoof of that sort of thing it's permissable to use some of its more... offensive clichés.

A couple of Monty Python references, I thought - the group scene where Jack asks the crowd leading questions (Then she's a witch!) and the argument over the pronunciation of 'kraken' (the Castle Aaargh) (My favorite part of the movie, right there).

Jack jumping into the kraken's maw was amazing - I love a good self-sacrifice, going down with guns blazing, even if it wasn't entirely voluntary. Of course, I was thinking "It's a franchise, and they're not really going to let anything bad happen to their main character," and then "Way to set up the third movie, guys." Regardless of that, it was good, as was the final scene, yes, even for a blatant sequel setup.

Things I don't like:

Monsters. I really, really don't like them. I think they're boring. Every scene with Davy Jones (who should actually be Welsh, but whatever) would have been a hundred times creepier if it had just been a normal man with a normal crew, who just happened to have been cursed to wander the seas forever.

However, the ship was awesome. Designed well, and the way it rose out of the sea was cool and scary - and the sails! AMAZING.

The Kraken. Well, I thought they weren't going to show anything but tentacles, and I would have been fine with that - we all know the kraken has tentacles (and that it's the symbol of House Greyjoy - but maybe that's just me). Once you get into showing that... mouth - I don't know, I don't really have a picture of the kraken, and I hope I'll never need to recognize one, but I think everyone should be free to make their own images of undefined mythological creatures.

And I've said this already, but third time's the charm - Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightly.

Overall, not bad for a totally unnecessay sequel.

Also, I think that what the world needs now is Don Juan, based on the Byron, with Depp in the title role.
