Last night I had the strangest dream. I was reading the second book in a series whose first book I hadn't liked that much, read a long time ago, and lent to [livejournal.com profile] dolique. Consequently, I was very much confused, although that might also have been because it was a very confusing book.

It was a sci-fi series, involving time travel and, it must have been, body-switching. The two main characters were a hardened commander of men and the young boy who was going to grow up to be him, who, due to some epic mistake, were living at the same time. There was also a third character, who might have been an older version of both of them, and so knew what was going on. They were in the military of an agricultural society which was constantly under attack from a group of nomads in spaceships, who called them the "Land Keepers," with some disdain.

The boy had been somehow switched into the commander's body too early, so he was in command of a detachment sent to take care of a group of raiders, but had no real idea of what to do. Therefore, he used a weapon wrong and ended up vaporizing a girl of his own people. To save her, he jumped in front of her and tried to pull her off the side of the spaceship, which only resulted in his death. However, he was brought back by Fate and the watcher, somehow

Also as a consequence of his inexperience, he was unwilling to yell at the veterans in his troop, which caused a major fight. The General sent the two of them to haul supplies to a group on top of a mountain, which was a necessary but not particularly honorable job. As they were doing this, it came out that the other man's mother had done something horrible, which had made him something of an outcast. I woke up just as the main character was pardoning his mother's sins.
